  1. With so many bands on various circuits slipping into various sub genres of metal it is pleasing to hear a band that fuses plenty of different styles. Callous not only fuse them, they do it very well and the music doesn’t sound cluttered. I find that some bands try too hard to be diverse in what they are trying to produce which makes them harder to listen to. With this EP I found myself being pleased with what I was hearing all the way through on the more than several times that I have listened to it.

The EP opens with the blisteringly good “As Martyrs May”. It’s down tuned guitar riff is pummelling and the shouted vocal sounds like you’re being assaulted. The track sets the tone for the rest of the EP which shows vocalist Jonny Gray’s ability to slip between shouted and clean vocals. The rhythm section of Luke Charles and Mike Orvis hold everything together as Ed Harrison gives the music a certain style and class with his great guitar playing.

There is a definite classic metal influence in the music on “Conviction” as well as a great variation in the vocal from the obvious metal core style to great clean vocal giving it a real anthemic feel. You can really imagine it in a live setting. The climbing guitar riff is backed up by some solid drumming. The musicianship of the band is again evident as “For Our Sins” takes the music down a more thrash route with a shouted vocal that gives way to an even more anthemic clean vocal and chorus that could quite easily take its grip on any audience. EP closer, “Slings and Arrows” again showcases more influences and styles fused with a twin guitar sound moving to a more mellow section. The track leads up to an epic end with soaring vocals and a quality guitar solo before a return to the style that Callous obviously favour.

As with any aspiring band there is always room for improvement but I think that Callous could certainly go on to produce something great. I will certainly be looking forward to any future releases after this.
