The Chosen Few Collection

Artisan News recently spoke to Rob Halford (vocals) and Ian Hill (bass) of British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST about the band's newly released compilation album, "The Chosen Few", which came out on October 11 via Legacy/Sony. Check out the chat below. The collection contains songs that were selected by some of the biggest names of the hard rock/heavy metal world, including KISS' Gene Simmons, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, METALLICA's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Alice Cooper and SLIPKNOT's Corey Taylor.

"This is a collection of songs chosen by our friends and respected peers," PRIEST frontman Rob Halford tells RollingStone.com. "So we hope all the metal maniacs out there will rock out to the tunes enjoyed by metal legends."

"The Chosen Few" will contain explanations from the artists about each of their selections, including Taylor making the argument that PRIEST's early MTV anthem "You've Got Another Thing Coming" established the group as "the blueprint for the ultimate heavy metal band."

Lars Ulrich (METALLICA) on "Beyond The Realms Of Death": "The blueprint for the epic rock ballad. Copied thousands of times, never eclipsed."

Ozzy Osbourne on "The Ripper": "This has always been one of my favorite JUDAS PRIEST songs… I just want to know what the fuck that note is that Rob Halford hits in the beginning of the song. Fucking hell!! That note is probably just below what only dogs can hear."

Alice Cooper on "Living After Midnight": "For a metal band, PRIEST has always used tons of melody... when you have a singer as great as Rob Halford, you have to write great riffs WITH great melodies, you can’t just have riffs. 'Living After Midnight' is the perfect example…"

Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES) on "Screaming For Vengeance": "JUDAS PRIEST have put out their fair share of great albums to be sure. But my all-time favorite is 'Screaming For Vengeance'. It was and still is, one of the best metal records ever produced and the title track is in my humble opinion, still ahead of its time."

Reign In Blood was released 25 years ago today

The release of Slayer's alltime classic "Reign In Blood" celebrates it's 25th anniversary today. The album came out on Tuesday, October 7th 1986 and was made available via DefJam Records.

Dave Lombardo to take part in Polands Drum Fest

Dave Lombardo, Tommy Aldridge (WHITESNAKE, OZZY OSBOURNE), Aquiles Priester (HANGAR, ANGRA), George Kollias (NILE), Derek Roddy (HATE ETERNAL, NILE, TODAY IS THE DAY) and Will Calhoun (LIVING COLOUR) are among the drummers who will take part in the 20th-anniversary edition of the International Percussion Festival Drum Fest, set to take place October 13-31 2011 in Poland.

Tom Araya and Kerry King were interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine when they played the "Big 4" show at the Yankee Stadium in New York this Wednesday (September 14th). Kerry King revealed that the band had already been rehearsing with Jeff Hanneman for 2 weeks but decided that Gary Holt of Exodus should play the "Big 4" show since Jeff's playing wasn't tight enough.

It was also mentioned that the band is trying to get Jeff back on stage for the "Fun Fun Fun Fest" in Austin, TX which will be held from November 4th - 6th 2011. Jeff Hanneman had to sit out all of the bands tours this year due to an infection on his right arm caused by a spider bite. Although not fully recovered he made a surprise appearance at the "Big 4" festival in Indio, CA on April 23rd where he played the last two songs of the set "South Of Heaven" and "Angel Of Death".

Kerry King explains absence from last nights 'Big 4' jam in Sweden

Kerry King explained his absence from the latest "Big 4" jam yesterday at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden:

"I was supposed to be there, but they changed the song at the very last minute. We were gonna play the Anti Nowhere League's "So What", so I had rehearsed that song. When they changed it to "Am I Evil?", I decided not to do it. I haven't thought about that song for two months since we played it in California."

Slayer already missed the first "Big 4" jam on european soil this year on Saturday in Gelsenkirchen, Germany due to travel arrangements to their next show.

Swedish Metal innovators THE HAUNTED have posted the re-scheduled dates of the band’s highly anticipated postponed tour as direct support of the mighty Slayer. In addition the band will also play several festivals this summer — see below for all so far confirmed dates.

Furthermore the band is currently working on a brand-new DVD/Live album release which is entitled “Road Kill” and will be released soon. Stay tuned for further updates in the next couple of weeks!

«As you might have noticed, the Slayer dates have now been moved to the summer (May — August). We are very happy to have been invited personally by Slayer as support for these club shows. We will of course add more tour dates / festivals in between the shows with Slayer, so keep checking our sites.

A lot has happened the last couple of months: We are working hard on writing new material. We are currently also finalizing the DVD 'Road Kill' which will be released in a couple of months time. More info about the DVD soon…
