OEF NEWSLETTER #2

Deathgnnd is tough to get just nght, pile on the death metal too thick and all the raw chaos vanishes -treading that fine line since 1993, Finland's furious ROTTEN SOUND will obliterate OBSCENE EXTREME 2011 with a perfectly controlled bombardment of extremity.
Relentlessly technical without sacrificing an single drop of passion, not lightly have Rotten Sound been compared to the late, great NASUM, their fourth album in particular, 2005's 'EXIT, showcasing the kind of ruthless perfection, intimidating musical skill and genuine anger that's made them very real heirs to the Swedish mob's throne.
Freshly signed to RELAPSE RECORDS and paying homage to their influences with last year's crust-caked 'NAPALM' EP, the mighty Rotten Sound are poised to scale new heights and become not just a rare 'mainstream metal' success for such a dedicatedly underground scene, but one who manage it by refusing to compromise on theirtoxic sound and rabble rousing politics.

PSYCHO
Boston's PSYCHO have been around for so long now. Started in 1981 as a punk band and released the legendary "8 song EP" in 1983. Then the band started to get some recognition being played regularly on local and national college radio programs. After putting out two full LPs PSYCHO were still staying in the punk rock vein but adding a bit of thrash to the mix. By 1990 and another change in bassist players PSYCHO got even more extreme with the sick death vocals. Over the next few years releases were plentiful ! Alot of split 7 inchers and a few full 7 inch eps were released. A killertour to Australia in 1992 secured the fact that PSYCHO are a brutal force in the underground music scene!
PSYCHO disbanded in 1994 but still released a few more split eps. The band decided to reform in 2005 with second bassist Ed Lynch and it was back to the punk/thrash /hardcore attack.
In 2010 they released the "Saw Blade" shaped 7 inch on PATAC Records . So far a small tour of Canada was done and they have been playing around the New England and New York areas very frequently. Also releasing 3 compilation Cds of all the old stuff, one of them is "The Grind Years" CD released on Selfmadegod Records from Poland/Europe. And now it's time to conquer Europe and Obscene Extreme Festival in 2011!

INSTINCTOF SURVIVAL
We were all very sorry INSTINCT OF SURVIVAL could not grind us with their stench core already this year but worse things do happen... Anyway, IOS have been invited for the coming year again and we believe nothing is going to stand in their way to Trutnov!!!
While everyone is desperately trying to sound like Earache would have released their first albumin 1988, Instinct Of Survival are cranking it back even further, convincing anyone who'll listen that Peaceville would have released their first LP in 1986 had they merely formed twenty years earlier. With these old school thrash/grind/punks ripping at their crusty heels.
Prepare your nostrils for maximum stench!!!

SUFFERING MIND
Listening to SUFFERING MIND it comes to my mind at once: an exclusive Polish answer to the beloved INSECT WARFARE? This is absolutely extreme mix ofgrindcore with power violence!!! Really an unbelievable, super uncompromising grind as the honeys like it!!! Grinddddddddd!!!

IDIOT CONVENTION
Afresh hardcore/thrash со re band, getting their name from and Anthrax song, combining hardcore/punk with thrashmetal and thrashcore. Played many shows in Belgium with bands such as Unkind, Asshole Parade, Voetsek, Sakatat, Active Minds, Raw Power, Insomnio, Colera, Lobotomia, ... and released a demoCD (sold out) and split tape with Agathodes (also sold out) so far. they're currently writing songs to release a full length EP with all new songs to be released this winter.

GLORIOUS TIMES: A Pictorial Of The Death Metal Scene (1984-1991)

Glorious Times revised edition now in print!

After MUCH tenuous effort, we are extremely proud to announce that our revised and extended edition of 'Glorious Times' is AVAILABLE NOW!

This is not a history book, not a book like any other music book. These are the memories from those involved in the early days of the scene in their own words. The memories THEY chose to tell.

Bigger and better than before! 160 pages of massively rare and mostly unseen photographs, tied together with sentiment and reflections from the very people who lived the era - the GLORIOUS TIMES. We refused to conform to the publishers who wanted every band's story (written in THEIR words) rewritten by a third party. We refused to take out our rare pics and insert promo line-up shots as the publishers wanted. Instead we sought out other photographers from the old days and found even more never before seen pictures. At the same time we also sought out a few more bands to make this version even better. We now have added 11 bands with stories from such legends as Ron Sumners (Slaughter), Scott Peterson (Cryptic Slaughter), Eric Meyer and Jim Durkin (Dark Angel), Joe Caper (Righteous Pigs), Brian Lehfeldt and Shann Mortimer (Wehrmacht), Ross Dolan (Immolation) and also Rob Urbinati and Scott Watts (Sacrifice) among others. Included too are pictures from the personal collections of Ron Sumners, Scott Peterson, Brian Lehfeldt, Ross Dolan and a bunch of others.

In addition to the new bands every old layout has been redone using industry standard software and formats so this time there are no skewed pics, no typos, etc. Many of the original layouts that were redone also include additional never before seen pictures. The Hellwitch section also includes a new story from Jim Nickles and the Unseen Terror section includes a new story from Mick Harris.

Bands featured : Acheron, Autopsy, Baphomet, Brutality, Cannibal Corpse, Cryptic Slaughter, Dark Angel, Death, Deceased, Deicide, Derketa, Disharmonic Orchestra, Exmortis, Groovy Aardvark, Hellwitch, Hideous Mangleus, Immolation, Impetigo, Incantation, Incubus, Insanity, Lethal Aggression, Malevolent Creation, Massacre,Massappeal, Master, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Nocturnus, Nokturnel,Nuclear Death, Overthrow, Paineater, Possessed, Prime Evil, Revenant, Righteous Pigs, Ripping Corpse, Sacrifice, Sepultura, Slaughter, Soothsayer,Terrorain, Tirant Sin, Unseen Terror, Vomit, Wehrmacht and Where's ThePope?

OBSCENE EXTREME 2011 - FRESH NEWS, LINE-UP

LOCK UP
Supergroup gets overused, describing the most unimpressive of bands and lame of disoographies. LOCK UP deserve it, and their OBSCENE EXTREME 2011 арреагёпсе will renew yourfaith. Originally formed by SHANE EMBURY (NAPALM DEATH/VENOMOUS CONCEPT), NICK BARKER (CRADLE OF FILTH/DIMMU BORGIR) and JESSE PINTADO (NAPALM DEATH/TTiRRORIZER) to blast out the most caustic, skin-flaying brand of deathgrind, the band were joined by the raw throat of PETER TAGTGREN (HYPOCRISY) for their debut album, 1999's fearsome 'PLEASURES PAVE SEWERS', and TOMAS LINDBERG (AT THE GATES/DISFEAR) for 2002's 'HATT: BREEDS SUFFERING', touring Japan and then falling into inactivity. Now joined by guitarist ANTON REISENEGGER (PENTAGRAM/CRIMINAL) in place of the late Jesse Pintado, LOCK UP are back in the most uncompromising style possible, planning a split 7" with the legendary BRUTAL TRUTH and an eagerly awaited show at OBSCENE EX~REME to prove to the real fans that the spirit of true deathgrind - not the over-produced, sugar-coated shit but heartfelt, raw brutality - is still very much alive.

VARUKERS
Original gangsters of punk/metal crossover, THE VARUKERS formed in 1979 in the same musical family that would spawn DISCHARGE, CHAOS UK and AMEBIX, blending spit-drenched punk rock intensity with a heavy metal wall of sound and unrelenting drum battery. Splitting in 1988, the band reformed in 1993 and embraced d-beat - as if there was no greater indicator of just how well they honed those scorching bursts of hardcore fury, vocalist RAT joined the resurrected DISCHARGE in 2003!
Still proudly anarchist, still utterly furious, THE VARUKERS are a potent re minder that punk is far from dead at OBSCENE EXREME 2011.

GRONIBARD
"What?? That shitty gay naked band again?? No way, [ won't come to OEF this year, that fest sucks"
That should be the normal reaction of 99% of the usual OEF crowd. Well, too bad for them, the band will be there and will only play songs from their so much hated 2nd full length in order to piss everyone off! Or maybe they won't, maybe they wont play at all and just fuck themselves on stage...

FLESHROT
Blasting their way through from the UK, Fleshrot bring their original take on Death metal to OEF. Mixing everything from old school death metal to modern day brutal riffs their original and brutal sound combined with their imposing live performances have devastated stages across the UK and Europe, its now time for OEF2011 to experience the Rot!!
"Were honoured to be playing at OEF, we have been wanting to play this festfora while and it couldnt of come at a better time! We will be blasting out shit loads of new material and tearing it up with you sick OEF moshers!! come support the UK scene and get wasted with us at OEF 2011!!"

DISLIKE
Well, this is todays grindcore from Pozega (Croatia). A band known for crusty and grinding chaos in their past has changed their sound, becoming more technical yet keeping the DIYpunk edge. There can be heard some influences from the early grind metal over later intense hc/crust to todays extreme music, but instead of predictable cloning Dislike managed to go in it's own direction.

REPROACH
Belgium's hardest hardcore/powerviolence/fastcore band. Toured with bands like Municipal Waste, Victims and more. Toured the US, Europe, UK, ... Released 1 Full length LP, a live split LP with Sunpower, a full length EP and a split EP with A.N.S. Played with the biggest of the biggest hardcore/punk/grind/crust /fastcore bands and always deliver a huge atmosphere with circle pits, moshing, stagedives!!!

After signing with Prosthetic, they released "Carving Desert Canyons", which Revolver called, "a cinematic blast of intricately melodic fretwork and pummeling percussion," in 2009.

The band, who received praise from Guitar World for their "tightly-woven guitar interplay, irregular time signatures and tasteful licks," has toured with the likes of PROTEST THE HERO, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, CYNIC, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT and were handpicked by DREAM THEATER to participate in the 2009 installment of their famed "Progressive Nation" festival tour. SCALE THE SUMMIT has also been featured prominently in Guitar Player magazine, and has tracks available for the Rock Band video game through the Rock Band Network.

Line-up:
Mike B. – vocals, guitar, Synth
M. – guitar
G.C. – bass
lix – drums

Facts
Since its inception in 2000, Viscera/// strayed quite a bit from the grind paths they were threading. What started out as a straightforward brutalcore band meandered into an experimental quartet. With the introduction of psychedelic sounds, postcore bits and ambient/drone pieces it's quite easy to brand this outfit as the next "post"-band. But there's
more that meets the eye: The band never completely let go of their roots, balancing brutal grindcore with delicate post metal influences. This results in a truly unique sound that can shift from fragile to frenzy in a heartbeat.
With this latest effort, 2 - As Zeitgeist Becomes Profusion of the I, these Italians produced their most ambitious and mature offering to this day which makes it the most complex yet accessible listening experience Viscera/// ever offered.

VOLTURE “Shocking its Prey”

1. Volture
2. Heavy Metal Machine
3. The Horde
4. Night Walker
5. Cheap Thrillz
6. Heathen’s Revenge
Over a few beers at a local Richmond watering hole during November 2008, the subject of putting a band together was raised between friends and fellow musicians Ryan Waste and Nick Poulos. The two had been tape trading for many years, delving increasingly deeper into obscure NWOBHM and early Scandinavian and European heavy metal. A life-long heavy
metal devotee, Ryan had formed a band in 2003 under the moniker of Immortal Avenger. Former members of Immortal Avenger including co-founder and vocalist Brent Hubbard and drummer Barry Cover would soon be called upon again to start a fresh project. Municipal Waste bassist Landphil took over rhythm guitar duties to complete the string assault.
The pieces had all fallen into place. All that was needed now was a name worthy of the heavy electric riffage that defi ned the band’s sound. The favorite working title was BAT (with seven T’s), but at the end of the day the band members agreed that it didn’t adequately represent the high powered heavy metal that they were creating. The concept of a much mightier creature
was hot-wired on the spot and the VOLTURE was born. The mythology quickly evolved as a vision of an electric bird made of steel, shocking its prey to an untimely demise came into focus.
In late 2009 Landphil left the band and the remaining four focused their attention on writing during this time. In January 2010 the four piece entered a small studio in Ryan’s neighborhood to lay down the tracks for their debut ep. Adding to the inherent raw intensity in their sound, the band completed much of the material on the fl y. Shunning modern studio trickery, the
members of Volture relied solely on their musical abilities to get the job done. During the mixing process the band’s imagery also came together at the hand of band friend and artist Sean McGrath, guided by the direction of Ryan. The electrically charged fl ying steel mascot and winged logo were conceived by McGrath and perfected in paint by the great
Andrei Bouzikov. The Volture fi rst born on canvas will soon be shared with the rest of the world on glorious 12” vinyl and CD on January 25th 2011 care of New York’s purveyors of steel, Heavy Artillery Records.
Since the recording, Volture is proud to announce the addition of Dave Boyd from heavy metal stalwarts Twisted Tower Dire on second guitar. After two years in the making, Volture made their fi rst live appearance on October 15th 2010 along with fellow Virginian speed metal legends At War. With tour plans in the works and a full-length album on the horizon, the
future is bright for Volture as they shock the music world back to life with their brand of true

BREATHLESS' debut album soon to be unleashed!!

It took over a year to finish the recordings and design for the debut album of spanish Thrash Metal newcomers BREATHLESS, but it was worth the wait!! Haling from Palma de Mallorca, BREATHLESS is decided to step firmly in the spanish Thrash scene with their first album "Thrashumancy" which is due for an imminent release through XTREEM MUSIC in January 15th, 2011.

With a classic Thrash proposal, BREATHLESS's intentions are no other than creating an intense yet catchy style with influences that sometimes could remind bands like CORONER, KREATOR (Extreme Aggression), SABBAT (uk) and a varied range of Speed/ Thrash influences specially from the good old german scene from late 80's.

With an excellent cover artwork created by famous artist Juanjo Castellano and a crystal-clear yet powerful production, "Thrashumancy" brings 13 songs that will for sure please every Thrasher around.

You can actually hear a few songs from the album at the band's official MySpace:

“Even The Dead Long For Spring” Track List
I. Blood For The Moon

III. Beneath a Blue and Silent Sky
IV. Immortality

BLOOD OF MARTYRS new lineup will be debuting live on January 13th 2011 @ Ash Street Saloon, PDX w/ Cemetery Lust, Aranya & Excruciator.

The following is an interview conducted by underground journalist Bruce Moore of The Metal Minute, PureGrainAudio & the extreme metal-oriented culinary book “For Those About To Cook” (soon to be published). The interview features both Markus Launsburry & Ryan Bartek speaking of their collective projects.

(***NOTE: Bartek will now be handling vocals/third guitar/samples with the recent addition of yet another ripping, unstoppable, juggernaut of a guitarist).

I recently had a conversation with Ryan Bartek and Markus Launsburry of the experimental black metal band BLOOD OF MARTYRS. The band is preparing to release their new material on January 1st and they are hoping to follow it up with a few short tours both here in the States and overseas in Europe. The conversation was quite interesting to say the least and covers many different topics including music, philosophy, religion and current events. Here is how it went…

You recently joined the experimental black metal band BLOOD OF MARTYRS and also released a slew of other projects this year. How did BLOOD OF MARTYRS come about and can you give our audience a brief description of your current endeavors?

Ryan Bartek: To any reader first encountering me, let me give a little background because it will make more sense. In short, I lived in Detroit until I was 25 and was heavily involved in the music scene. I’d been in bands, worked on hundreds of shows, wrote for a host of newspapers/magazines and also put out a book in 2005 (“THE SILENT BURNING”) that gained some notoriety in the underground. In 2006 I got a gig writing for Metal Maniacs (because of “THE SILENT BURNING”) which eventually led me to quit my Detroit grindpunk band A.K.A. MABUS to go on the road as a traveling journalist. For a year I was all over the USA reporting for Metal Maniacs & a half-dozen other zines. Simultaneously, I wrote a book about the American underground called “THE BIG SHINY PRISON.” Once I completed the final draft in June 2008, I decided to take a breather. I’d just moved to Seattle and was trying to plant roots & build foundations. One thing leads to another… By Febuary 2009 I was ready to tour the entire summer as a freelance journalist again. But the Wall Street Crash destroyed the market, and Metal Maniacs went down with plenty of others. So I did two national USA tours with Downtown Brown as a documentary filmmaker/merch guy/acoustic opener, both of them 6? week campaigns (you can watch the video collection here: http://www.youtube.com/user/sasquatchagnostic ). In September 2009 I began writing a new book about the past 8 years called “ACROPOLIS NOW” and in November released “THE BIG SHINY PRISON” as a FREE PDF Download. It has since become something of an underground hit and I am actively plotting the European sequel to take place Summer 2011.  [***SHAMLESS PLUG: ”THE BIG SHINY PRISON” is a 315 page nonfiction beast that chronicles 293 days of non-stop extreme journalism (12.21.2006-10.13.07) throughout 32 states, 606 hours on Greyhounds, two national tours & hundreds of interviews with artists/musicians and can be downloaded FREE here: http://ryanbartek.angelfire.com/blog/  ***END SHAMLESS PLUG] Anyway… I move to Portland, Oregon in April 2010 with high hopes of starting a full-time, real-deal, skull-crushing extreme metal commando unit. After much struggle I find BLOOD OF MARTYRS. Our debut show is Thursday, January 13th @ The Ash Street Saloon, Downtown Portland. We are also confirmed for the Northwest Black Circle Fest in May 2011. Amidst this flurry of obsessive practice & fine tuning, I pulled off some other interesting feats. On July 4th 2010 I released my entire back catalogue as a FREE DOWNLOAD – three albums from my grindcore project SASQUATCH AGNOSTIC, the unreleased A.K.A. MABUS record & my acoustic album as JACK CASSADY. On 9/11 I also released a free reissue of my first book “THE SILENT BURNING.” Also, on 10/20 (the 6 month anniversary of the BP OIL SPILL) I released my report on the subject which has been widely received & promoted virally on the internet.

Every band has its musical influences. What are some of the other bands and artists that have greatly influenced you guys and your music?

RB: BLOOD OF MARTYRS is the brainchild of lead guitarist Markus Launsburry. He’s been recording material with this for a number of years, but this is the first time the band has been a solid, live entity. He has a huge stockade of fully developed songs, so we’ve been working on his designs with each member adding their own unique feel to the material. The bassist & drummer both recently moved from San Diego and were previously in the experimental metal band ACRISIA (www.myspace.com/acrisia), so that will give a feel of our rhythm section. My own description of BLOOD OF MARTYRS is if you took oldschool BETHLEHEM (like S.U.I.Z.I.D. & Dictius Te Necare), added the razor-sharp BM slicing of Impaled Nazarene, some thrashy, hard-rocking classic metal; a little Morbid Angel/Melechesh mysticism, interspersed with tidlewaves of droning, tribal, blackened psychedelic doom. Markus used to play in NACHTMYSTIUM for a stretch, and was a big contributor to the Instinct/Decay album which, in my opinion, was the only NACHTMYSTIUM album I was ever into. So that is a big part of the sound. Luckily Markus wants to chime in, so…

Markus Launsburry: As Bartek said, I've been working on this material for quite some time now. Some of the songs we are now playing were written nearly ten years ago, while others are only a few weeks old. There is a backlog of about 40 songs for BLOOD OF MARTYRS, and I am always writing new material. I find myself in a pretty much perpetual state of creativity, and this is doubtlessly fueled in no small part by my ravenous consumption of various forms of music. While underground metal is what first drew me to playing music -- and continues to be my life's blood -- over the years I have immersed myself in everything from free jazz to progressive rock, African and Middle Eastern trance music, noise and power electronics. Really anything that expresses deep conviction and resonates on a highly energetic level. So while BLOOD OF MARTYRS is firmly rooted in the filthiest underground metal tradition, my compositions aim to reflect the depth and diversity of creative energies that surround and flow through me. As far as actual specific influences, off the top of my head I would say early Voivod, early Enslaved, Bathory, King Crimson, Swans, Sun Ra, GodspeedYou!BlackEmperor, Neurosis, Bitches Brew era Miles Davis, Interstellar Space era Coltrane, Can, Acid Mother's Temple...

The band keeps things interesting thematically. Can you talk about some of the subjects you will be tackling on your new material?

RB: I’ll hand that one to Markus…

ML: Thematically the lyrics of most BLOOD OF MARTYRS songs are similar, and stemming from the basic existential premises that 1) this world we find ourselves in is devoid of explicit divine guidance 2) that 'fate' or 'destiny' are fallacious concepts and 3) that life is, at it's very foundation, lacking any appreciable meaning or value. But while this realization is often the catalyst for despair, utter hopelessness, and self-destruction, I see it as enabling the opposite -- it is a realization of one's potential for ultimate freedom. As such, most of my lyrics relate the struggle of the soul that is Awakened yet not yet Free -- the endless cycle of despair, anger, hatred, loss, pain, catharsis, and the return of hope (however fleeting). This cycle is as inevitable as it is trying, and it is through this suffering that we are able to burn away our elemental weaknesses and imperfections, ultimately revealing a Divine form. The lyrics of any given song may reflect a singular aspect of this cycle, or the cycle in its entirety. To put this inner struggle into terms that relate to the world at large, we see that if we reject as intrinsically false the patterns of socialized thoughts and behaviors that harness mankind to the yoke of oppression, then mankind may indeed one day arise and fulfill his massive potential. So the work of BLOOD OF MARTYRS is to convey this consciousness to all those who have eyes to see and ears to hear; our aim is nothing short of the apotheosis of ourselves and those who would come with us on this inner journey.

When can we expect new material?

RB:  The new record Even The Dead Long For Spring comes out January 1st 2011 (1.1.11). It’s a four song EP that was originally meant for a split, but Markus decided to move forward. The current live lineup does not play on that record – instead it’s Markus & Chris Wozniak, the drummer from LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR. We hope to record something in the next few months, if even a raw live album from a DAT mix. In my opinion, raw is usually the best…

ML: Even the Dead Long for Spring is a strange bit of BLOOD OF MARTYRS history. Originally it was just a rehearsal recording of myself and Woz (Chris Wozniak) playing through some material. A couple years back I suffered an injury that was, for all intents and purposes, crippling. I had a lot of time on my hands and just to keep myself occupied I decided to flesh out those rehearsal recordings by overdubbing vocals and solos. Somehow the good men at Lundr Records got a hold of the tracks and asked me if I would like to put out a split with Wheels Within Wheels. Although the material I had was very raw, I agreed because I fully enjoy and support the Lundr roster (Panopticon, Wheels Within Wheels, Seidr, Lake of Blood). It is an honor to be associated with those bands, and I find myself more in agreement than disagreement with their expressed values -- something very rare for me. Unfortunately, that release has been pushed back a number of times. So as 2011 drew near I decided to just go ahead and put out the BLOOD OF MARTYRS material from the split on my own, just to have something for fans when we play live. But, as Ryan said, we are hoping for at least a raw recording with the new lineup very soon. To that end we have something planned for the first week of January that should accomplish that goal.

What is the toughest lesson you ever learned in the studio and on the stage?

RB:  That once you finally break that shell and become your instrument deep in the middle of a razor-sharp live set, when the entire world disappears and you’re just raging, it’s like a drug that has no parallel and that all life outside of it becomes negligible… In the studio I’ll sum it up as “never work with an unprofessional.” That’s the make or break moment for a lot of bands – if you got a guy that can’t hack it in the recording process.

Besides musical influences what other artists and philosophies contribute to the main messages you try to convey to the listeners?

RB: The overall theme of my work, ranging across the variety of media I’ve employed, is the harsh reality of absurdity and man’s personal & collective entrapment by it; furthermore, man’s personal & collective response. As for BLOOD OF MARTYRS…

ML: My whole life I’ve been a student of history, philosophy, religion, the occult. As a result, all the combined wisdom, revelations, breakthroughs, and insights that I have come into contact with have made their impression on my psyche. So every thing I have ever read, or thought, or experienced, has shaped my inner world, and, by extension, my art. One finds foreign ideas, assesses them, then chooses to reject or assimilate them. We can expropriate a couple terms from the Greeks here, and say that we find what truth 'is' (cataphasis), versus what it 'is not' (apophasis). In more concrete terms, you could say I am influenced by the ideas and writings of Jung, Austin Osman Spare, Nietschze, Baudrillard, Hesse, Phil Hines, Foucault, Camus...the list goes on. The bottom line is that all these ideas are part of my syncretic approach to philosophy and spirituality; they are facets of the crystalline structure of my consciousness. I find that when the mind and the soul are fixated on the Path, there is a greater understanding of the proper relationship between oneself and other aspects of consensual reality -- such as concepts of politics and socio-economic structures. So the anarchist ideals which we espouse are informed by a certain level of spiritual consciousness; when one rejects the concept of a Cosmic King, it is only natural that he would also reject the idea of a worldly King. In this way, we can see that the slogan 'No Gods, No Masters' is not just a convenient catchphrase, but in fact represents self-determination at its deepest level.

What kind of music are you listening to? Do you keep abreast of new music? What artists would fans be surprised to find on your Ipod?

RB: This year I discovered a lot of old-new stuff – chiefly albums I missed or never had by Type O Negative, Frank Zappa, TSOL, DRI, Boxcutter, Bad Brains, Burial, Angry Samoans, AUS-ROTTEN, Circle Jerks, Dr. Octagon, Elvis Hitler, Haujobb, Scala & Kolancy Brothers, Skinny Puppy & The Revolting Cocks…

How important do you consider a stage show for your band?

RB: Extremely important – I attempt productions as opposed to random bands in slop order at a drunken bar. Every band I’ve been involved with has had some over-the-top live aesthetic. My last full-time band A.K.A. MABUS was like a grindpunk LAIBACH with the exploration/manipulation of propaganda as a central theme. We handed out Jehovah’s Witness-style pamphlets before shows, had a mountain of TV’s playing an array of stolen media, had crazed onstage antics, weird consumes, sound sampler. BLOOD OF MARTYRS will be another intense presentation, but thematically rooted in an earthy, ethereal & tribal vibe. Markus will elaborate further…

ML: BLOOD OF MARTYRS’ live presentation is more of a ritual than a rock concert. Generally the performance will start with an ensemble of drummers pounding out deep tribal rhythms as a troupe of burlap clad, clay covered dancers leap and swirl about, while walls of feedback saturate the room. When the crescendo of otherworldly energy is palpable, the band will segue into our first song. From that point on it is an utter onslaught of alternating chaos and order; imagine the craziest, most visionary experience you've had... one where you see Pure Light, and Pure Darkness, and when you finally return to a place of 'normal' consciousness, you realize that you have seen the face of God - and the face was your own. BLOOD OF MARTYRS is not concerned with simply being a 'great metal band' -- although we do intend to be that. Instead we approach each performance as an act of ritual catharsis, enacted for the edification and enlightenment of ourselves and our tribe.

Tell me about a book or two that you’ve read that you think other people should read?

RB:  I read like a machine, constantly, and am a sucker for ranting literature. Yet above all, at least in my universe, Henry Miller is the king. There is nothing I can say about the human experience that isn’t summarized already better in Tropic of Capricorn & Tropic of Cancer. Other highly recommended points of interest that people probably haven’t heard of include Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet, Comte De Lautreamont’s Maldoror & Celine’s Journey To The End of The Night.

If you had not become a musician what other career path would you have liked to attempt?

RB: If I’d gone to college for journalism instead of just going at it full-tilt DIY I’d just be graduating into a dead field economically with astronomical debt. So I’m content having been able to fulfill that need. For myself, art is all-embracing. Find a way to live cheap & make the ends meet. To be a road dog & serious musician at 29 means most of the early characters in the struggle have long-ditched out and in the end it’s you vs. the machine. The only way to “make it” is to bust your ass, accept material sacrifice, swallow uncertainty & keep fighting the endless Sisyphean battle in a heroic-yet-losing struggle with fangs bared to the bitter end. Better to go down a legend of opposition to compromise then to close the curtain a meek worm.

What three words best describe your band?

RB: Magick, Anarchy & Evolution.

ML: Gnosis, Catharsis & Apotheosis

Do you have any touring plans made yet?

RB: Markus and I have both toured the USA a number of times with different projects, so yes, we can definitely set something up and have been ruminating on what might work. There is a possibility we might be able to schedule a short European tour that will coincide with my European Book next year. Most likely there will be a short West Coast tour, probably Seattle down to San Diego then back up in 2 weeks. I personally have turned down a number of tours this year. I get acoustic tour offers, spoken word offers, merch-work offers at times. However, I’ve stayed put because I wanted to do a band and do it right. The real bitch is that once I finally get to this point, the economy explodes. It’s not like it once was, where one can just crash on a couch in some random city and find some bullshit job in one day. Now you go on tour, wash up broke somewhere & get stuck. I’m forced to play it safe & I don’t like it.

Any closing words?

RB: We are now entering a rather interesting & historic pinnacle in United States history. It’s fever pitch now at every conceivable angle & 2011 will be a game-changing, world shaping year – in an extremely 1984 sense might I add. The second WIKILEAKS drops the encryption password for their “DOOMSDAY FILE” the entire illusionary history of everything we’ve been force-fed will crumble to ruin. Above all, the catastrophe of the BP OIL SPILL will be publicly documented & the murderous effect their Corexit 9500 oil dispersant is having on all human life it touches. Too much to relate now, but I highly suggest anyone reading this to look up my report on the subject ( http://www.scribd.com/doc/39720625/ACROPOLIS-NOW ). Apart from this looming reality, I will continue my Sisyphean struggle & encourage any interested parties to check out BLOOD OF MARTYRS. My entire book catalogue & music discography can be downloaded 100% FREE at the following link -- http://ryanbartek.angelfire.com/blog/ … Thanks to any out there taking the time to read this and to yourself for the interview & support.

ML: If there is an overarching impression we, as a band, wish to leave, it is of a vast and bleak post-apocalyptic wasteland, whose forbidding expanse nonetheless holds untold secrets and unworldly beauty for those intrepid enough to open there minds
to the Unknown. Godhood awaits those who are unafraid to stand naked and unafraid, and leap into the Void. Step into the Darkness - and embrace the Light... they are one and the same.

In the past weeks, the resurrected band has been confirmed to appear at several notable open air festival events for 2011 in Germany. Here is the exact list of dates announced so far:

The band’s setlist will mainly consist of songs from the “Cursed” album as well as some cuts from the classic 1989/1990 EP‘s “Resurrection Absurd” and “The Eternal Fall”.

MORGOTH have been recently locked up in their rehearsal realms to audition drummers and can now proudly announce former Destruction / Orth drummer Marc Reign for their upcoming 2011 live shows. The band comments as follows: “We are happy to announce Marc Reign as the one who will be handling the drum duties during our shows for the 20th anniversary of the release of the “Cursed” album. During the rehearsals we felt very quickly that Marc would fit perfectly to us as his punch and timing are incredible! Welcome aboard!”

Marc Reign added the following: “In 1990 when I was a teenage kid into Death Metal I went to a MORGOTH Show (with Demolition Hammer and Obituary) at Berlin’s ‘Ecstasy’ and was amazed by the fact that the German Death Metal formation MORGOTH could compete with the American scene bands. When 20 years later Mille of Kreator introduced me to those guys it was totally clear to me what I wanted to do: Going back to my Death Metal roots and jam the hell out! The rehearsals turned out being awesome, so we’ve decided to work together! The power was right there…and a dream came true! See you at the summer festivals!”

The band’s final line-up for the upcoming anniversary shows is therefor now completed to be:

Darkest Hour: NEW album, NEW track online & European TOUR!

Some metal bands barely last 10 years, much less 15 years. If a band does get to the decade-and-a-half mark, they're usually sputtering out or are teetering on their last, diseased and ready-to-give out legs. Rare is the case where an aggressive band mutates, growing stronger, more unstoppable and more menacing with every passing riff, scream and album. DARKEST HOUR are such a case.

“The Human Romance” is the Washington, DC-based band's seventh album and will be released on March 7th via Century Media Records in Europe. The new album is DARKEST HOUR at their best: fangs bared and ready to pounce through the vehicle that blends thrashy melodic metal with something unworldly.

From today on you can check out the first fantastic track, “Savor The Kill”, of the new album
HERE. Also make sure to follow the bands studio webisodes, the first two parts of ten are already online: CLICK HERE for part 1 and HERE for part 2!

In their past, DARKEST HOUR have retreated to such far away locales as Sweden and Vancouver to record. For “The Human Romance”, the quintet set off to North Carolina to work with Soilwork's Peter Wichers recording at the Echo Mountain complex in Asheville and Old Towne Recording Studio’s in Winson-Salem. The result is thrashy, American metal with roots in punk rock and hardcore, which is part and parcel of the DARKEST HOUR sound. Only now, it's fresher and rejuvenated and the band isn't tethered to the tyranny of one specific sound or style; DARKEST HOUR make metal, by their own rules and standards.

The track-list of “The Human Romane” as follows:
1. Terra Noctunus (01:16)
2. The World Engulfed in Flames (03:52)
3. Savor the Kill (03:48)
4. Man & Swine (03:44)
5. Love as a Weapon (04:00)
6. Your Everyday Disaster (02:46)
7. Violent By Nature (02:21)
8. Purgatory (03:46)
9. Severed into Separates (03:27)
10. Wound (03:42)
11. Terra Solaris (08:41)
12. Beyond the Live you know (04:12)
European Ltd. edition Bonus Track:
13. Hierarchry of Heathens (04:52)

Starting January 26th DARKEST HOUR will unleash some of the new songs on a big European tour run, don’t miss the show near your town!

------------

GORGUTS from Canada joined the billing of PARTY.SAN OA 2011. This band is definitely a death metal dinosaur(formed back in 1989) which is still going, even more technical and more extreme. The band survived many trends, broke up, started new and is still going strong! GORGUTS will present you a technical and extremely furious death metal show you might never forget. They will definitely twist your mind while watching their show. Dont miss this band!

British thrashers EVILE have finally confirmed the main support bands for their upcoming U.K. tour

British thrashers EVILE have finally confirmed the main support bands for their upcoming U.K. tour
and we’re proud to announce that it’s none other than British Thrash Metal ELIMINATION.

With new drummer James Last fully primed, ELIMINATION look set to make their mark in 2011.
Since 2007, Elimination have been laying crowds to waste with live performances and
have been on the receiving end of glowing reviews from major & international press alike.

Their last release 'Destroyed by Creation' epitomised the melody and brutality that makes heavy metal great:

“Capable of the kind of reckless speed and heaviosity that Metallica wish they were still able to pull off, Elimination are surely destined for big things...”
[Big Cheese]

The tour, which takes place in February,
will allow the boys to whet the appetite of thrashers everywhere
as they perform new material from their eagerly anticipated new album
‘Through the Eyes of Madness’.

Catch EVILE on tour, with support form ELIMINATION, MUTANT and one extra lucky band at each show band selected by EVILE and Metal Hammer readers!

February 9th | Manchester - Academy 3
February 10th | Newcastle - Academy
February 11th | Glasgow - Cathouse

INCANTATION Members Comment On Decibel Hall Of Fame Shows

After a string of successful shows commemorating the recent induction of their 1991 classic, Onward To Golgotha into Decibel's Hall Of Fame, members of INCANTATION have made the following statements thanking fans and friends for their continued support.

"Hi, yes we would like to thanks everyone for the support. We had a great time! Incantation fans are the best and we look forward to seeing you guys next time on tour". - John (McEntee, guitar/vocals)

"Hello friends and metallers. I would like to personally thank all my friends and everybody that came out this past weekend to support Incantation. We traveled some serious miles to bring all of you the best live Incantation shows to date. It was an honor to play for you the album that helped create the path for what Incantation is today. Playing the Onward To Golgotha songs were a pleasure and from the crowd response, I'm glad you liked it as well as we did playing it. And for those of you who got to hear our new unreleased material for the up and coming movie soundtrack for After Party Massacre it was again a great feeling to hear you tell us that it's some of the best Incantation you've ever heard. Amazing response, THANK YOU!!!  I would like to thank Albert and all of the Decibel Magazine metal crew, Dan from Pantheon Agency, the local promoters in Chicago, NYC and Cleveland, Funerus, Fatalist, Cardiac Arrest, Mortician, Embalmer, Soulless, the best Incantation working crew their ever could be, 'My Neighbors' Driver John, Evl, Kristoff, and Anderson, most importantly John McEntee, Alex Bouks, Chuck Sherwood, Jill McEntee, Sam Inzerra and everybody else that was involved to make this happen!! As you may have heard we recorded this weekend audio and video, so look for this amazing blasphemous metal weekend to be available on DVD so it can be remembered forever!!!! Hail Fuckin' Metal!!!"

- Kyle Severn (drums)

"Just got home from a great few days and very tiring time. I want to thank all the fans and Albert and Decibel for making this all happen; especially everyone from NY who stuck around to make that show happen. Cheers" - Alex (Bouks, guitar)

"Many killer memories and also some real insane moments that'll forever be carved into our memories from this Onward to Golgotha trifecta of metal assault! The first show took place at the Reggie's Rock Club after merging with Funerus and Fatalist we were welcomed by the hellish maniacs who attended that night. Cardiac Arrest was a true sight to behold with their unrelenting rage and force. Great to share a stage with those grinding, churning, malevolent purveyors of metal yet again. The staff and everyone at the Reggie's Rock Club were brilliant. Re-introducing or reuniting with friends from Cult of Daath, Ezurate, Cyanide and our other friends and comrades who made the trek to come and show their support. It was great to share a stage and or see you all again! Our new mage of the stage, sound guy namely a John "Evl" Sustar was great at providing his talents to make for a killer show. Also his expertise came through with his amazing recording of the three shows which is sure to surface. Through the set of the first release which is the whole intent of these shows we also played some other tracks from the lengthy career of the project which were hopefully taken as we intended. With nothing but torturous metal energy!! From there we left for the long journey to NY's own Europa club. Aside from the new found camaraderie of our plethora of 'Johns.' Merch guy, number 2 of 4, John 'Mr.' Anderson keep our sprits high with his technique of cutting off impatient commuters in 'The City.' The 15+ hours on the road there (with little to no sleep) made my mind wonder to a scene in In the Mouth of Madness where the very road beneath the car would disappear to storm clouds and lightning. All of us persevered to a very rushed but successful show with the mighty Mortician sharing a stage with us for total of a little over an hour. Fatalist however who traveled from California wasn't so fortunate when they were notified they wouldn't be playing that night due to time constraints of an early end and a 'double dipping' situation having both a show and dance club on the same night. Our sympathies go out to them for although the events that transpired were out of our hands, long travels and miscommunication reigned indefinitely. The metal merchants which included Jim and Craig of the original Golgothaline up, Richard Christy, and many others who came out to support were a standing tribute to the dedication and ardent nature of metal. We salute you all, and thank you for making the night memorable. After a frenzy of equipment and merch whirlwinded from the Europa, we found ourselves back in the vans making miles yet again back to Cleveland. With our John 3 of 4, 'Driver John' Williams put forth an effort that shamed most, by hauling us and the gear for eleven-hour stints and just pushing himself to the limit. We finally arrive in Cleveland to a great start when Embalmer took the stage followed by thrash masters Soulless who after their 2nd song were abruptly stopped by a power outage that lasted what seemed like forever. After almost two hours of darkness the mood had turned from boredom to rage when Fatalist hit the stage crushing the audience before their immediate departure back home. Funerus was to follow pulverizing the audience yet again. With the whole of the show and the entire weekend for that matter Kristoff who took time from his busy schedule of shooting After Party Massacre, not to mention his horrormerch.com business. He and his camera were to follow documenting the trip, the insanity, and the violent barrage of metal that took place. Also to mention Kristoff's footage will be an official Onward to Golgotha: Weekend With Incantation DVD set, for next years release. Many hails to his flurry of paparazzi moments and all of the hard work he put into each show. In conclusion, the first album personally speaking was a mind altering experience back in the early 90's when I was a foot shorter and much more a novice to legendary death metal acts such as the one I'm now proud to be a part of. With a line-up of such insane musicianship and talent that made the Onward to Golgotha album I could only hope that the past three shows paid homage to them and kept the flames of their legacy burning bright. A strange situation in a way to find this said album being herald into a hall of fame when it was only such, to the minds of those whom came into contact with it. Amongst the 15-18 year-olds back then (myself included) who treated this album as a time honored piece, never could imagine such a thing. Hails to everyone who was involved and whom we've met while out for the three show run this past weekend. Till our next meeting."

- Chuck (Sherwood, bass)
